The Governors and staff of Ashfield Junior School are committed to the principle and practice of equality of opportunity.

We have an inclusive ethos which means all staff, pupils and parents work together to ensure that everyone, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, disability or social background can work collaboratively to thrive and achieve.

We also provide opportunties to develop our pupils understanding and appreciation of equality and diversity, in the local community and wider British society where we pupils can show respect and kindness to all.

Through our Personal Development, R.E. and assemblies, we ensure our pupils consider and value diversity and celebrate our different cultures together.

In line with one of our core values, pupils are taught to respect and celebrate difference and understand that everyone, regardless of race, gender, sexuality or disability has equal value. Staff model respect and understanding in school and model our values of respect, kindness, cooperation and resilience.

The Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act 2010 replaces previous anti-discrimination legislation with a single Act. The Equality Duty is set out in section 149 of the Act. It replaces the three previous public sector equality duties – for race, disability and gender – and covers the following protected characteristics:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership (but only in respect of eliminating unlawful discrimination)
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Gender
  • Sexual orientation
