Exploring Culture Through Language Learning: Year 6 and the Fête du Citron

Culture and tradition are essential aspects of language learning, helping students connect with the language in a meaningful way. This term, Year 6 has been immersed in French culture by exploring the Fête du Citron, an annual festival held in Menton, France, every March. This spectacular event features enormous, intricately designed sculptures made entirely from lemons and oranges, displayed in vibrant parades on mobile floats.
To bring this tradition to life, Year 6 students worked collaboratively to create their own festival-inspired structures using orange and yellow plasticine. Following this year’s space theme, they designed, built, and painted their floats before parading them. This hands-on experience allowed them to appreciate French culture while developing teamwork, patience, and creativity. Their “out of this world” designs have been a huge success, and they are being celebrated for their dedication and enthusiasm.
